To the person driving the tan truck with a water tank in the bed, my life flashed before my eyes when you came around a blind corner on the Monument straddling the yellow line. Luckily my Subaru Forester was small enough to go between your truck and the rock wall without crashing into either. My theory is that you had water in the tank, and you went around the corner too fast, and the water sloshed to one side and the weight made it hard to get the truck through the turn. A reminder to water haulers, and everyone. Slow down stay in your lane, and also do not pass bicycles on blind corners. I like living, and hope you do too.

It all started with a good turn-out for the Coates Creek Pancake Breakfast. Thanks to all who attended or sent donations. Then at 1:00 PM the action moved to 16 1/2 and DS Rd. for Glade Park's second parade (when was the first one?). Then the parade ended up at the new Glade Park Community School for their Fall Fest. The weather was beautiful, and Pinon Mesa was decked out in fall color. Thanks to all who helped to make things happen, and those who came out to support the activities.

On Oct. 2 Chuck and Patti(Brouse) Shear are sponsoring a showing of 11 paintings by a famous cowboy artist who came to Pinon Mesa for inspiration:
"In 1926, Bryant purchased 40 acres and a cabin on Pinon Mesa but continued his work in New York. After losing his savings in the stock market crash of the 1930s, he returned to Pinon Mesa for good in 1938. For the next two years, he painted but almost starved and was lonely. He married Ruth in 1940, and she and her sister began to earnestly market his work. His big break came in 1941 when he was juried into an exhibit at the Grand Central Art Gallery in New York City."

According to Theresa, the GMC truck reported missing in the DS Blotter turned up at the Knowles Canyon trail head. It appears that a hiker or mountain biker must have "borrowed" it to get to the trail head. Borrowing without permission is still theft. Not advisable. But at least it is back with it's rightful owner.

Betty Ann Lutz Morse went to her rest on Saturday, July 18th. It is the loss of one more piece of our pioneer treasure. In addition to being a dear friend, she has been a collaborator in collecting Glade Park history for the book we are working on. My biggest regret is that she will not see it in print, but I hope that she enjoyed the research trips and interviews of old timers as much as I have. Her funeral will be at Calahan-Edfast Mortuary, Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 am.

According to The Daily Sentinel police blotter, a 1979 GMC truck was stolen sometime in the past three weeks from the area of 10800 BS Road. I hope that the person it was stolen from will go to the New Currents page submission form and give us a description, or better yet, download a picture of it, with contact info. Although it has probably already left these parts, maybe someone saw something that would be helpful in solving the crime. We need to be curious about anything that looks suspicious. Would you rather have nosey neighbors, or have someone get away with ripping you off? I choose nosey neighbors, or Neighborhood Watch.

The smell of wet sage is on the air, the ground is still wet...this cool, wet weather sure lowers the risk of fires! WRONG! These conditions are encouraging grass and weeds to grow, which creates even more fuel. Later on in the summer when it gets hot and dry the risk of a big fire goes up. Right now, after a rain, is a good time to mow the grass and weeds around your house. There is a lower risk of a spark from the mower hitting a rock starting a fire --yes, that can happen in hot, dry conditions. If you haven't cleared brush and trees that are too close to your house, this is the time to do that also. For more tips on fire mitigation follow this link.

It is time to fill the bird bath. The bluebirds eat insects, so they will not come in to a bird feeder. But they love a drink and a bath. Right now the babies are out of the nest, and the whole family comes in together, for lessons in bathing. We have the Western Bluebirds here. The males are bright blue, but the females also have soft greys and browns, along with some blue. If you do not have any blue birds, a bird bath may still attract them this year. And if you do not have any blue bird houses on your property, get some out for next year!
